2nd March 2012 – Canon today announces the latest addition to its  EOS range with the launch of the new EOS 5D Mark III. The EOS 5D Mark III builds on the performance of the EOS 5D Mark II, with improved speed, greater resolution, enhanced processing power and creative options for both stills and Full HD movies.

EOS 5D Mark III offers enhanced performance in almost every area. A new 22.3 Megapixel full-frame sensor offers the ideal balance of resolution for stills and HD movies and up to 6 frames per second (fps) shooting. The EOS 5D Mark III has the same 61-point wide-area AF system with 41 cross-type points, five dual cross-type points and 63-zone metering as the EOS-1D X ! That means it should be extremely precise and fast.  Customisable AF pre-sets introduced in the EOS-1D X are also available, providing the additional reliability in situations where subject movement can’t be predictable. It’s powered by the latest DIGIC 5+ processing technology, and it also features enhanced video functions, offering improved image quality alongside greater audio control. With an increased 8-channel read out, the EOS 5D Mark3 handles a maximum full resolution speed of up to 6fps in bursts of 18 RAW images or over 16,000 JPEGs (When used with UDMA 7 certified cards ). The sensor offers a native ISO range of 100-25,600, expandable to 102,400. We can’t wait to test that out !

DIGIC 5+ image processor powers a range of new functions. 14-bit A/D conversion provides smoother tonal gradation and transitions between colors. In-camera HDR shooting combines three different exposures and allows yout to choose one from five preset tone maps. With in-camera RAW processing and editing capability, you’ll have the option to begin post-processing photos while still on a shoot. The EOS 5D Mark III features a new Creative Photo button. It enables you to select Picture Styles and capture multiple exposures, and offering a direct access to the HDR shooting mode. In playback, pressing the Creative Photo button displays a new comparative playback function, displaying two images side-by-side allowing you to compare the quality of different exposures.

We can see that they put a movie mode switch (like on a EOS 7D) and a recording button that will now offer better usability, enabling videographers to begin shooting immediately. Additional movie functions include manual exposure control and a range of high bit-rate video compression options, with intraframe (ALL-I) and interframe (IPB) methods supported. Variable frame rates range from 24fps to 60fps, and the addition of SMPTE timecode support that provides greater editing flexibility and easier integration into multi-camera shoots. You can also check and adjust audio during recording via the camera’s Quick Control screen and a there is a headphone socket on a side that enables sound level monitoring. It is also possible to trim the length of recorded movies in-camera.

The screen is the same as on the EOS 1Dx  (3.2”). 1,040k-pixels provide a nice resolution to accurately check image sharpness and focus. The UDMA 7-compatible CF card slot plus an SD card  (Compatible with SD, SDHC, SDXC cards and Eye-Fi connected functions )  slot enables shooting to both cards simultaneously, auto switching when the one in use becomes full and the option to copy images from one card to the other in-camera.

Sample Shots

Notice: we did compression on images cause of size (they can still take some time to load, as size is avg around 1-2 MB), you can check original on link under each picture, with much longer load time as sizes are much bigger, around 5-10 MB. We are not impressed with quality of this shoots but all we can do is wait to see more from this camera.

The new EOS 5D Mark III seems like a real deal, at least on paper. A fully capable 22 mp full frame camera with an autofocus system from EOS 1Dx featuring 6fps. Most people will argue about 22 mp, as Nikon D800 went up to 36 mp, but not many would use advantage of mps so we can only wait and see how these two cameras compare.
It looks like the new 5D grew up and I sense this camera will be very popular.

On other hand reading comments from many users around the globe, about posted image and video quality from Canon, we can just say, be patient, prices will drop, reviews will be up pretty soon, and by what I can read, we shall see winner between D800 and Mark III pretty soon too.
